Leira Celebrates 25 Years of Crafting Quality Footwear

Today, February 3rd, Leira proudly marks its 25th anniversary. Founded in the year 2000 in Felgueiras, Portugal, Leira has grown into a respected name in the production of mid-to-high-end women’s footwear, with a daily output of around 700 pairs and a solid international presence.

Reflecting on this milestone, CEO Isabel Teixeira recalls the company’s most defining moments: “The year 2000 marked our beginning, and over the years, our participation in international fairs has played a key role in our journey.” Among the many accomplishments, she highlights the creation of the brand Play Motives, multiple PME Líder distinctions between 2008 and 2023 (except in 2015), and being named PME Excelência three times.

Not every initiative met expectations. Teixeira openly mentions the 2008 attempt to diversify with the children’s footwear brand W2F: “It was a diversification effort, but not a successful one,” she admits.

Sustainability has become a cornerstone of Leira’s strategy. The company recently achieved ISO 14001 certification, reinforcing its commitment to reducing waste and expanding renewable energy usage through photovoltaic panels. Leira also achieved an ‘A’ rating in the BSCI Code of Conduct and is an active member of SEDEX, strengthening its ethical and transparent supply chain practices.

The company’s steady growth over the past 25 years is the result of daily dedication and overcoming challenges. “The evolution is visible, as are the difficulties,” notes Teixeira. “But we continue our daily commitment to progress.”

She also emphasizes the critical role of the team in this trajectory: “Without our employees, progress would not be possible. They are a dynamic asset. We’re deeply grateful to those who have been with us since the beginning and to those who have joined — or will join — our journey.”

Training and development have remained priorities, ensuring a skilled workforce ready to meet industry demands.

Looking ahead, Leira remains focused on adapting to the future of footwear manufacturing. “The times are changing, and while there is still much to improve, our drive to overcome challenges is what keeps us moving forward,” says Teixeira.

“The trend is clear — environmental sustainability. But we also believe that creating value for others is just as vital to our mission,” she concludes.
